Over the next seven weeks we will be exploring each of the seven chakras and how it’s possible to balance and heal these energy centres through your food choices.
Not sure what I’m on about? You might want to start here.
All of the seven chakras are interconnected and balancing one will ultimately affect the other, but if your root chakra, in particular, is unbalanced, the rest of the chakras will inevitably be unbalanced because it lays the fundamental foundation for our entire energetic system.
Here’s everything you need to now about your root chakra and what foods will keep it in balance….
The Root Chakra (First Chakra)
Sanskrit name: Muladhara
Location: Situated at the base of the spine.
Meaning: Represents our foundations, being grounded and finding stability in life. It includes your basic needs such as food, water and shelter as well as your emotional needs, such as connection and a sense of security. Your fight or flight response is initiated from the root chakra and it is often associated with survival.
Health: An imbalanced root chakra will affect your physical structure eg feet, legs, joints and muscles. It’s also associated with your adrenals and endocrine system. Emotionally it will trigger feelings of loneliness, insecurities, abandonment, depression, disconnection and instability.
Heal: If you feel that your root chakra is imbalanced go for a barefoot walk outside in nature and feel the earth between your toes. Yoga poses like tadasana (mountain pose) and the warrior poses are great for bringing you back into your foundation and finding stability.

Foods that balance your root chakra
- Root Vegetables: Vegetables that grow deep within the earth help to keep us grounded and embody the energy of the root chakra. Try potato, sweet potato, parsnip, turnip, carrot, beetroot, onion, garlic, ginger and turmeric.
- Proteins: Eggs, meats, beans and nuts are all high protein foods that are very grounding and nourishing for the root chakra.
- Red foods: It probably comes as no surprise that the colour of the chakras and the colour of foods are inextricably linked. It is believed that eating a wide range of red fruits and vegetables are great for balancing the root chakra. Strawberries, cherries, apples, pomegranate, tomato and raspberries.
