Inspired Wednesdays with Emmily Banks

22 April 2015 | Inspired Wednesdays

Happy Wednesday friends! I’m so excited to share today’s interview with you because it centres around a topic that I’m keen to explore further on this blog.

The paradox between being a wellness crusader, an ethical consumer and an organic and chemical-free foodie, but also wanting to doll yourself up with makeup, hair colour and other pretty things. Is there space or even more specifically, product that allows us to be both?

Well, it’s become Emmily Banks mission to make sure there is. Emmily is an all natural and organic make up artist who like many of us found her two passions, wellness and beauty, lay in opposing fields. So she bridged the gap and created Depths of Beauty, a makeup service that uses all natural and organic makeup that is not only gentle and nourishing for the skin, but also just as effective as that other junk.

I for one, do NOT have a toxic-free makeup kit, and it’s something I’m keen to revamp pronto. Emmily offers organic makeup services, but also a very informative blog and links to her favourite natural and organic products. Check out www.depthsofbeauty.com.au for more info.

Tell us about the journey from everyday makeup artist to extremely passionate, soul nourishing, cruelty free and eco-friendly beauty crusader.

My professional makeup journey began at the ripe age of 19. I was deciding whether to study Natural Therapies, a huge interest of mine, or Makeup Artistry, a creative outlet I had always been naturally good at doing, and attracted to. Being a teenager, the glitz and glam of the beauty and fashion industry won. So I went on and studied makeup, built my portfolio for a few years and eventually started landing gigs to work on magazine covers and with celebrity clients.

It had always been on my agenda to explore and hopefully transition to natural beauty, if the products performed well enough, once I had built a credible portfolio. The turning point was when I started receiving complimentary beauty products to promote. I just didn’t feel comfortable with it. I was always aware that beauty products weren’t necessarily “good for you” so how could I continue on this mainstream path and start endorsing them?

I set out on a mission and began buying, testing and trialling all natural and organic beauty products… and what I found was AMAZING! There are so many beautiful natural products that work incredibly well these days! I also started researching the ingredients and production methods of all products. The truths I began uncovering about toxic ingredients, animal testing and the sacrifice of our environment when it comes to mainstream beauty were appalling! I was shocked at just how bad it really is!

So far, my eco beauty journey has made me recognise that there is such a huge lack of awareness around healthy, eco-friendly, cruelty free beauty. It appears to be a field that is severely under-represented. So I’m now on a mission to make it common knowledge and to offer the healthier, natural alternatives to mainstream beauty that WORK! I’m out to help others make more conscious, educated choices when it comes to beauty… and I’ve never been more excited or felt so purposeful!

Now that we’ve heard your inspiring story, what kinds of things inspire you?

I find inspiration anywhere and everywhere, from friends, family and clients to animals and nature; beach walks and ocean swims always leave me inspired and in awe!

I also find people who are making a difference in this world for the better, VERY inspiring. Entrepreneurs who don’t conform to society’s restrictions and expectations… Those people who dream big and have self-belief to build empires that serve and help others.

There can be a stigma in the wellness world that caring too much about material commodities like clothes, shoes and makeup is superficial and encourages consumerism. What are your thoughts on this?

I agree, that in an ideal world, to be our healthiest, happiest, most grounded, spiritual self and to live without ego or harming the planet, we would need to be living purely off the land and run around barefoot and naked drinking out of water holes (sounds great doesn’t it?). Though realistically, in today’s society, it’s not a feasible reality for most. It’s for this exact reason that I think all we can do is “our best” with the “knowledge we have” to make small steps or changes towards living happily with “less stuff” in our lives.

I for one, believe that the healthiest beauty for everyone is to wear as little or no makeup at all, but if I tried to start spreading this message, how ready or willing do you think people would be to listen or make this drastic change? Not very, I think. Hence why I am focusing on helping people transition to more natural options and take small steps towards wearing less and loving themselves from the inside out!

Everyone is on his or her own journey to discover what really makes them happy and I believe that only through time and experience will people realise that happiness doesn’t come from the material commodities in life.

Perhaps it’s better to respect the journey of others and opposed to holding judgement for their decisions and consumerism? We can instead, help to educate, inform and encourage change for the greater good. Knowledge is power and sometimes people just don’t have the knowledge to make the best decisions for their health and the planet? Small steps taken by millions, equals massive steps as a collective.

Depths of Beauty is all about creating beauty from the inside out, and applying beauty on the outside to nourish what’s within. What are some of the ways we can begin to nourish our beauty from within?

I’m not the first to say it and I won’t be the last, but honestly, true beauty comes from within. Only when you love yourself and believe you are beautiful do you treat yourself with care and respect, and nourish your body.

First and foremost it starts with the mind; meditation can help you to slow your thoughts and become more aware of your internal dialogue, so that you can start changing any negative thought patterns and turn them into positive patterns instead! As a result of positive, self-love thinking, I strongly believe you will naturally be attracted to start nourishing your body with exercise, healthy wholefoods and all the things that make you glow from the inside out!!

Nourish your mind first, then nourish your body through healthy balanced eating and lifestyle for beauty from within!

If someone was looking to contribute to their beauty routine through the foods they were consuming, what are some good beauty foods to start with?

Ooh there are so many amazing beauty foods! Foods packed full of vitamins, minerals, healthy fats, antioxidants and Omega-3 fatty acids are a great place to start as they help to detoxify the body and help to prevent cell degeneration. Skin damage occurs as a result of oxidation, a chemical process in which unstable molecules called free radicals steal electrons from healthy cells – by eating the right foods we can slow this process!

Some of my favourites include:

  • Spring Water: Don’t underestimate the importance of drinking purified water, so important for hydration and overall health.
  • Avocado, coconut and flaxseed oil: all healthy fats essential for skin health!
  • Cold pressed organic juice: green juice is great, but don’t forget beetroot, so good for cleansing the liver!
  • Kombucha: Full of probiotics and antioxidants!
  • Green and Berry smoothies with coconut water, veggies, nuts and seeds.

If you start eating more of what the earth naturally provides, you’re body will start loving you back and you’ll be glowing in no time!

How can we apply mindfulness principles to our beauty regime?

  • Go back to basics – use less, more often.
  • If you haven’t already, consider swapping to more natural, eco-friendly, cruelty free products once your makeup starts running low – I’m here to help if anyone needs assistance with this!
  • Multi-use products – don’t buy several different beauty products when you can use what you already have to achieve the same results, i.e lipstick as blush, bronzer as eye-shadow.
  • Start thinking outside the box, consume less and waste less… Also remember that we vote with our dollar. Start voting for brands and businesses with better ethics and commitments that truly serve you and the planet.

If you could pass on one piece of advice for optimal health and happiness, what would it be?

Start loving yourself, now. Not tomorrow, NOW. I believe it is only when you start truly accepting and loving yourself, you can give wholeheartedly to others and experience optimal health and happiness.

Can you name three people that inspire you?

In all honesty, I don’t have a top three. As mentioned above, I am inspired by so many different people for so many different reasons. I realise this isn’t the question, but I’m going to say it anyway… to me, there is no such thing as “the most inspiring person”, I think the qualities and achievements of multiple people combined create “the most inspiring person”. I guess on a spiritual, energetic level, we are all one anyway…. So if you combine everyone in the world, there’s my most inspiring person right there! We’re in this together and everyone inspires me!

What’s your favourite inspirational quote?

A quote I have always loved and resonated with is pretty simple and straight forward but I believe it holds so much truth…

“You can either think you can, or think you can’t, either way you are right” – Henry Ford
