Foods that Balance Your Throat Chakra

Over the past month we have explored the three lower chakras; the root, the sacral and the solar plexus chakra, and of course our bodies energetic centre; the heart chakra.

Today we move on to the fifth chakra and the first of the higher chakras – The throat chakra.

Sanskrit name: Visuddha.

Colour: Sky blue.

Location: Situated at the base of the throat.

Meaning: The throat chakra governs our communication and creative expression. It reflects our authenticity and is all about speaking our truth. Hearing, and specifically listening, is also associated with the throat chakra as it is a vital part of good communication.

Health: An imbalanced throat chakra may result in indecisiveness, lack of creative expression, inability to defend yourself and an unwillingness to accept criticism. The throat chakra is responsible for the sensory apparatus of the body including the lips, nose, ears and tongue, as well as the breath, voice, larynx and pharynx.  An imbalanced throat chakra may manifest physically as a sore throat, stiff neck, incessant cough, swollen glands, grinding teeth and hearing issues.

Heal: Immerse yourself in the blues of nature. Spend time under a bright blue sky or immerse yourself in the depths of a blue ocean. Yoga poses to open and balance your throat chakra include fish pose, which helps relieve upper respiratory congestion and stretches the muscles and glands in the throat, thyroid and thymus. Camel pose, which stretches the front body and when done in full stretches and stimulates the throat. Plow pose is also great for the throat chakra and differs from the other two by opening up the back of the throat rather than the front body.

Foods that Balance Your Throat Chakra

Liquids play a large role in healing the throat chakra because of their lubricating qualities; soups, warm teas, cool juices and of course water are all encouraged. Avoiding dairy is highly recommended as it can congest your throat and sinuses.

Blue foods: Blue is a colour rarely found in natural foods. Blueberries and blackberries are your best bet and when blended into a smoothie with hydrating coconut water make a very healing throat chakra tonic.

Fruits: Particularly fruits that grow on trees like apples, pears, oranges, peaches, apricots and plums – and listen to the reason why… they are said to be 100% authentic by falling off the tree when they are ripe and ready – love it!

Throw frozen blueberries, coconut water, avocado and protein powder of your choice in a high speed blender and top with your favourite toppings.
